City officials have identified 17 priority areas that lack access to healthy food. Those neighborhoods, primarily in South St. Petersburg, have more convenience stores than all other food resources combined.
The initiative, which began as a small-scale produce market during Nutrition Month, evolved into a weekly food pantry when hospital staff realized food insecurity was an ongoing issue.
The aim of the Healthy Food Action Plan is to provide new solutions to longstanding food access issues in the city.
